Medicare Claim Process for
“Focused Psychological Strategies”

If you are an Australian resident and hold a valid Medicare card you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate. Follow these easy steps to access your Medicare rebate.

Step 1: Get a Referral from Your GP
​
Before starting therapy or once you have started, visit your GP and request a Mental Health Treatment Plan with a referral for “Focused Psychological Strategies”.

Your GP will provide:

A written referral, addressed to the practitioner:

Your full name, date of birth, and your Medicare number.

80155 at least 50 min in person
80165 at least 50 min telehealth

💡 Tip: Book a double appointment with your GP to allow enough time for the plan.
​
Step 2: Attend Your Session & Pay the Fee
​
Attend your session and pay the full fee directly to your practitioner. After your session, you’ll receive a detailed invoice that includes:

Service date

Your name and your Medicare number
-
Practitioner’s name, provider number, practice address
-
Medicare Item number for the service
-
Amount paid

Step 3: Claim Your Medicare Rebate
​
You can claim your rebate in two easy ways:

✅ Online (Fastest – 1–7 days)

Log into your myGov account, linked to Medicare
-
Select Make a claim
-
Enter the details from your invoice
-
Submit – your rebate will go to your bank account

✅ In Person (Up to 21 days)

Take your invoice and Medicare card to any Service NSW or Services Australia office

Staff will help you lodge the claim

💡 The current Medicare rebate is $96.65 per session (as of 2026) for up to 10 sessions per calendar year.
​
Need More Sessions?
​
After your first 6 sessions, return to your GP for a progress review. They can approve up to 4 more sessions, up to the annual limit of 10.

Always ensure your bank details are up to date
