Medicare Claim Process for “Focused Psychological Strategies”

If you are an Australian resident and hold a valid Medicare card you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate. Access your $89.50/session Medicare rebate in 3 simple steps.
Step 1: Secure Your Referral
Before starting therapy book a double appointment with your GP to create a Mental Health
Treatment Plan. Provide them with the following details to ensure your referral is valid:

Your Details: Full Name, Date of Birth, Medicare Number.

GP Details: Name, Medicare Provider Number.

Request These Item Numbers:

80160: Individual Client Session (≥50 min) – Rebate: $89.50

80166: Family/Carer Session (≥50 min) – Rebate: $89.50 (Max 2/year)
Step 2: Pay & Attend
Pay the full session fee before your appointment. Following your session you will receive
a detailed invoice containing all necessary claim information (Service date, Item number,
Provider numbers, and Amount paid).
Step 3: Claim Your Rebate
Claim your $89.50 rebate instantly via the Express Plus Medicare App or myGov (Online).
1. Log in to Medicare via myGov or the App.
2. Select "Make a Claim".
3. Upload a photo of your invoice and proof of payment (receipt).
4. Enter the Item Number (80160 or 80166) and the amount paid.
5. Submit. Funds typically arrive in 1–7 days.
Alternatively, claims can be lodged in person at a Services Australia centre (processing time: up to 21 days).
Tip: Your initial referral covers up to 6 sessions. To access your remaining 4 sessions (up to the 10-session calendar year limit), you must return to your GP for a progress review and a new referral letter.
